Envelopes Guide
Envelopes come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, which can make it difficult to pick exactly which one you need. That’s why we have created a helpful envelope guide that details all you need to know about the various envelopes we stock on the Codex store. Whether you’re in need of window envelopes or non-window envelopes, C5 envelopes or C4 envelopes – all are available in various colours from trusted brands including Q-Connect, Basildon Bond, Conqueror, New Guardian, Plus Fabric and many more.
Types of envelopes
Window envleopes
A windowed envelope is a conventional envelope with a plastic window. Most window envelopes, especially those used to mail invoices, are used to display the name and address of the recipient on a form inside the envelope, thus saving the expense of addressing an envelope.
plain envelopes
Regular envelopes or plain envelopes are the standard of business envelopes. They can come in a varity of colours such as manila or white, and a range of sizes. We stock most sizes inlcuding DL, C4, C4, C5.
polythene envelopes
Polthene envelveoples or bags are lightweight, plastic packaging mailers made of moisture-resistant polyethylene. These plastic bags come in many sizes and dimensions and are perfect for mailing products or as an added protection for documents againts liquid damage.
HIGH SECURITY ENVELOPES
High Security envelopes are designed for sending sensitive information through the mail. They are most often used for any documents or letters that you wish to keep confidential. They are commonly used in business when sending out important documents or contracts
padded envelopes
Padded bags or envelopes are a sealable paper pouches lined with cushioned packaging material. They are easily recognized because of their bulk, relative to regular non-padded envelopes. These types of bags come in a range of different sizes and are ideal for protecting fragile items in the post.
board backed envelopes
Board Backed envelopes are made with strong cardboard and are the best option for extra protection against bending or breaking when posting important documents or material.

Closures
SELF SEAL
The bottom part of the flap is folded down, as is the top part.
Both parts have a strip of latex. To seal, the top and bottom
parts of the flap are lifted and the top part then folded over
the bottom part and pressed together to form a seal.
Self seal envelopes must be stored in a temperature controled
eviroment to avoid degeneration of the adhesive.
GUMMED
An area of gum is applied to the flap and a silicone strip is
attached. This strip is removed and the exposed gummed flap is
turned down over the back of the envelope and pressed down to
securely seal.
Gummed envelopes are the only envelopes that are suitable for
automatic machine inserting.
PEAL & SEAL
Peel and Seal is one of the most secure ways to seal an
envelope. The release tape is simply peeled away from the flap
to reveal a strip of latex which, when pressed, forms an instant
bond.
Due to its sealing properties, peel and seal acts as a tamper
proof security seal as it is impossible to open the envelope
without tearing the flap.

Colours
Envelopes can come in a variety of colours but are usually are
either White or Manila. A white envelopes simplicity makes it an
ideal choice for sending business letters while still looking
professional. On the other hand manilla envelopes are also a
popular option but are more suited for either low cost mailings or
filing and document keeping because of its darker tone and lack of
transparency.
If you’re looking for a pop of colour why not explore the colours
of the rainbow in our range of envelopes. Coloured envelopes are
less used but are perfect for grabbing attention and are best used
for marketing purposes, birthdays and invitations. Red, pink,
green, orange, and blue are just a few of the many shades
available.
